What is IRC?

IRC is a text-based chat system for instant messaging. IRC is designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-on-one communication via private messages as well as chat and data transfer, including file sharing (copy pasted this from wikipedia, lmao.)

Tldr, IRC is a pretty old messaging system, probably one of the earliest forms of internet chatting. It was launched around August 1988.

Why do I like IRC?

1. it's lightweight
2. no bullshit like nitro or premium
3. i can use whatever client i want or even write my own client
4. it's simple - follows the KISS principle.
5. has a bunch of cool communities.
6. has a lot of scope for technical customizations.
7. IRC is totally decentralized
8. it's fast, simple and easy to use
